The Feldenkrais™ method
The Feldenkrais method belongs to the field of somatic education. It was invented and developed over 70 years ago by Moshe Feldenkrais and is known and practiced all over the world.
This method allows the person who receives it to feel and to move better, by finding or rediscovering simple and effective ways of moving, by gently setting the body in motion.
Inspired by the principles of children's sensorimotor development and relying on brain plasticity (neuroplasticity), it aims to teach us to move and act differently, through a playful exploration of gentle movements and associated sensations. To move in this way helps to improve one's daily life in the long term.
Through the conscious exploration of movement, it brings many benefits in different areas or activities of our daily life: sports and artistic practices, the challenges of aging, health prevention at work, support for people with special needs or rehabilitation, wellbeing for all.
What are the benefits?
The practice of this method actively participates in:
-
learning to move and breathe differently;
-
gaining flexibility and mobility throughout the body;
-
in better coordinating one's movements and in reducing unnecessary physical tensions resulting from an "internal conflict of functioning" at the muscular, tendon and articular level;
-
improving one's postures and one's ways of moving (walking, running, dancing, playing a musical instrument, etc.);
-
be more present to yourself.
More globally, it allows each of us to go beyond his limiting habits without going beyond his comfort zone. It is not a question of doing "more" going on's beyond the limits, but doing "better" in what is accessible and possible for each of us, according to our morphology, history and physical capacity in the moment.

Who was Moshe Feldenkrais?
Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984) was a physicist working under the direction of the couple Joliot-Curie and Langevin. Great sportsman, passionate about martial arts, he actively participated in the introduction of Judo in Europe and in the creation of the Jiu Jitsu Club of France. Following an inoperable knee accident, he developed his own method to regain his mobility and allow him to continue to practice his art.
After the Second World War, he focused his research exclusively on the development of the method that now bears his name, a method that he continued to refine and teach throughout the world until his death.

How is it practiced?
It is generally offered in 2 forms:
During group classes called Awareness Through Movement®, the practitioner guides the students, usually lying on the floor, using verbal indication. Each participant explores the proposed movements by themselves, following a series of movements which form a coherent sequence around a function or a theme (sitting, getting up, bending, rolling, etc.).
During individual session called Functional Integration® , the practitioner offers a "tailor-made" accompaniment adapted to the needs of the person, guiding her or him in his movements by a soft and gentle touch. That allow the person to learn ways of moving with greater ease.
Both forms can be practiced at any age, regardless of their physical condition. There is no notion of a goal to be reached, nor of performance in the proposed movements: it is a question of exploring, developing one's curiosity and one's bodily feelings, at one's own pace.
In both cases, it is a question of allowing the nervous system of the person to learn more efficient ways of doing things which will be integrated durably in their daily life.
